Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) will soon have a dedicated electric vehicle-making factory at Narsapura, Karnataka, which will produce one million EVs by 2030.

HMSI outgoing president and CEO Atsushi Ogata said the production of its first EV will start in March 2024.

The company announced its plans of manufacturing two EV models in 2024, one a mid-range with a fixed battery and another with a swappable battery.

The fixed-battery EV will be based on an existing ICE platform and will be launched around March. The swappable battery electro-scooter will be launched in September next year, said Ogata.

“We will produce six lakh EVs at Narsapura’s e-plant in the first year and ramp up production to one million EVs by 2030,” said the CEO.

Honda will start a scooter assembly line at its Vithalpura plant in Gujarat with a six million capacity, which will ensure the Narsapura plant only makes EVs.

HMSI will domestically manufacture EV parts such as batteries and PCU. The motor will be designed and produced in-house, in line with the Centre's localisation plan.

It has entered into a partnership with HondaPowerpack Energy to utilise their battery exchangers for swappable battery types.
