In a blog post, Google said it was following the Competition Commission of India’s (CCI) October 2022 order, and in compliance with that direction, it is expanding the billing choice to all developers.

The options are use Google Play’s billing system; offer an alternative system or the user choice billing system alongside Google Play. The third option is to operate on a consumption only basis without paying a service fee, even if it is a part of a paid service.

“Most developers globally have already elected one of these routes. In India, now that the deadline has passed, we are informing developers in the country who have not yet implemented one of these options that we will be taking necessary steps to ensure our policy is applied fairly. We continue to comply with local laws and co-operate with local proceedings, as applicable,’’ Google said.

In October last year, the CCI had imposed a penalty of Rs 936 crore on the tech giant.
