The government on Wednesday said medical insurance for workers will be mandatory for units that resume their activity from April 20.

The new guidelines of the home ministry make it compulsory for all these units to provide medical insurance to the workers. The notification, however, did not specify the size of the cover.

There was also some ambiguity on whether the guidelines were referring to a personal accident policy or a mediclaim for the workers.

Trying to allay the cost concerns, Gurdeep Singh Batra, head of retail underwriting at Bajaj Allianz General Insurance, said group mediclaim policies were affordable and small units should not be worried about the cost aspect.

Several corporates already have such policies where its employees are covered.
