The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has set up a digital market unit in line with the recommendations of the standing committee on finance to help the fair trade watchdog address anti competitive behaviour in the digital market space.
“We have set up a digital market unit in CCI to help the commission understand new technologies going forward,” said CCI chairperson Sangeeta Verma on the sidelines of an event organised by the Merchant Chamber of Commerce.
The standing committee in its report on anti competitive practices by big tech companies in December 2022 had recommended the strengthening of CCI with the creation of a specialised digital markets unit to monitor established and emerging systemically important digital intermediaries, give recommendations to the Centre and adjudicate on cases related to digital markets.
The chairperson said that the commission is watching the digital space so that enterprises can grow their business without facing strategic entry barriers.
