CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury reacting to the Union Budget presented on Tuesday termed it anti-people and wondered whether there was any clarity as to whom the budget catered to.

Taking to Twitter, he said, "For whom is this budget? Ten per cent of the richest in the country control 75 per cent of the wealth. The bottom 60 per cent don't have even five per cent. Amidst this global pandemic unemployment, poverty and hunger have increased. In this situation, those who have made huge profits they could have been taxed."

The CPM has also lambasted the Centre for reducing the subsidy in food, fertilizers and petroleum. "Anti people budget. When human suffering exponentially grew during last two years, subsidies on food, fertiliser & petroleum slashed. Cruel assault on people's livelihoods," Yechury added.

And Yechury added, "Govt tom-tomming 35.4% increase in capital expenditure. This includes repaying Air India loan not backed by assets of nearly 52Kcr. Minus this and purchasing defence equipment capital expenditure is lower than last year allocation. 'Lies, Damned Lies & Statistics'."

"The richest 10% Indians own 64.6% of country's wealth. India has 200 million missing jobs today. No urban employment guarantee announced. MGNREGA allocation remains the same as last year 73Kcr, which fell short by nearly 50Kcr. A criminal assault on the livelihood of our youth.#Budget2022," he added.

An assault, Yechury said, was made on farmers. "Propaganda & Spin is to double farmers incomes. FM proudly announces 2,37LCr as MSP on wheat & paddy directly credited to farmers accounts. This is less than the MSP payments in 2020 - 21, which was 2.478LCr. Criminal assault on farmers continues," he wrote on Twitter.
