Public sector company Bridge and Roof will approach Indian Railways to kickstart wagon manufacturing and repairing as it looks to build its order book and increase revenue.

In 1954, the city-based company got its first orders for 500 railway wagons. For the next two decades, it has been rolling out railway wagons from its workshop at Howrah. However, after 2013, the company has not received any wagon order from the railways.

“We are looking into the possibilities of resuming the construction and repair of wagons. The workshop at Howrah has the capability to produce wagons but there are no orders. We will approach Indian Railways with this,” said Sunil Kumar Sarder, chairman and managing director of Bridge and Roof Company (India) Ltd.

The company, which is celebrating its centenary year, posted a gross turnover of Rs 3,082.41 crore in 2018-19 and is on course to increase it to Rs 3,500 crore in 2019-20.

The operating profit is also expected to increase to Rs 65 crore from Rs 51.42 crore in 2018-19.

The company has an orderbook of around Rs 8,500 crore across projects in railways (bridges), power and the hydrocarbon sector. Around 30 per cent of its order book is in the private sector.

“Our financial performance in the last 3-4 years has been gradually increasing and the trend will continue this year. The strategy now is to improve the orderbook and get more projects,” said Sarder, adding that the company anticipates increasing its revenue to Rs 5,000 crore in the next five years.

The company is eyeing new projects in power and roads amid the government’s push to infrastructure development, besides undertaking projects for the railways.
