BMW India is seeing fast adoption of its electric vehicles (EVs) in the country.
The ix, an electric SUV, is its best-selling model with the electric sedan i7 and the electric gran coupe i4 along with the Mini electric hatch comprising its EV portfolio here.
"We have the largest EV portfolio in India," said Vikram Pawah, president of BMW India, told The Telegraph over the phone.
While the ix is at a similar price point as the X5, the i7 is near to the 7 Series. Both EVs command a good share of the market compared with their internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts.
BMW has the most affordable EV in its kitty, in the Mini Hatch which retails at Rs 52 lakh.
"The ix has already garnered 50 per cent of the market and the i7 has an equal demand as the 7 Series. Adoption will also quicken with more usage, and the company has empirically found out that the usage of EVs is roughly 45km a day in intra-city drives," Pawah said.
Apart from giving free home chargers to its EV customers, the company is putting up 50 kW DC fast chargers in 35 cities. These chargers can be accessed by any EV user and they take around 20 minutes to charge up to 100km.
The company globally has a goal of reducing its carbon footprint by 50 per cent of its levels in 2019.
Pawah said: "In India, we are aligned with our global goals and we will reduce our carbon emissions. We will cut about 80 per cent of our emissions from factories by 2025, 20 per cent from our supply chains, and 40 per cent from car usage."
The company has no goal of going completely electric.
"We want to give choice to our customers to pick from ICE vehicles and EVs and this is true of our global strategy but we also have clear goals of carbon reduction," he added.
