Nitin Gadkari, Union minister of road transport and highways, on Monday said leading automobile manufacturers are geared up to introduce flex engines in India that can run vehicles on alternative fuels such as ethanol.

The move to introduce flex engines comes at a time petrol prices have crossed Rs 100 per litre. There is also a challenging global commitment to become net zero in terms of carbon emission by 2070.

Flexible fuel vehicles have an internal combustion engine and are capable of operating on gasoline and any blend of gasoline and ethanol. Brazil, US and Canada are among the countries where vehicles are permitted with flex engines.

“Toyota, Hyundai, Maruti are ready to launch these vehicles. It will result in savings for the consumer,” said Gadkari at the annual session of Indian Chamber of Commerce.
