Reliance Jio on Tuesday said Indian users' data must remain within the country as chairman Akash Ambani pitched for "incentives" including that on electricity for Indian companies ready to set up AI and machine learning data centers.

Speaking at the India Mobile Congress and ITUWTSA 2024 (ITU World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly), Ambani termed AI as a revolutionary tool. Jio, he said, is making all out efforts to bring the benefits of AI to every Indian, everywhere, just as it did for mobile broadband.

He said the scale and speed of multilingual data generation in India, which will drive the AI revolution, will grow exponentially.

"We request the government to expedite the updating of the 2020 draft of the Data Centre Policy. Indian data should remain in Indian Data Centres," he said.

Accordingly, Indian companies ready to set up AI and machine learning data centers should get all necessary incentives, including incentives for power consumption.

VIL prospect

Fundraise and subsequent capex cycle have placed Vodafone Idea on a more secure footing, ensuring it remains competitive, Aditya Birla Group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said on Tuesday exuding confidence about the telco scripting a turnaround.

During the inauguration of the Mobile Congress, Birla told reporters that while Vodafone Idea Ltd (VIL) has been written off several times in the past, it is about time that such impressions about the company are shed.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Birla said he is confident that with continued support of the government, VIL will do its part in realising India's digital destiny.

Birla further said that VIL's fundraise has enabled the company to kick-start its capex cycle.

"Vodafone Idea has already announced the next phase of capex worth $3.6 billion These are all key steps that place VIL on a more secure footing," he said.

Birla said he is of the firm belief that VIL's turnaround is around the corner.
