The Patna University, ahead of the Patna University Students’ Union (Pusu) poll, will carry out a drive to evict illegal occupants from hostels.

The varsity administration will take the help of the local administration.

The hostels have always been a nuisance for the college administration as boarders are involved in various anti-academic activities.

The university administration feels that boarders and outsiders who are occupying hostel rooms can create problems for the varsity administration during polls.

The Patna University has prepared a list of hostels where eviction drives will be carried out. Some of the hostels include BN College hostel, Minto, Jackson, Iqbal and Nutan of Patna College, Law College hostel, Rani Ghat hostel, Hatwa hostel, PG hostel and Saidpur hostel.

Dean, education, and chief election officer Khagendra Kumar said: “The Patna University, along with police, will conduct raids at these hostels before the polls. Also till the election, there will be regular monitoring on the activities of boarders at these hostels.”

Khagendra also said as per varsity administration, entry of outsiders at hostels will be restricted from 10pm. Sources said in the last Pusu election, there were reports of outsiders in vehicles entering Patna University hostels late in the night. As boarders play an important role in poll process, it is the hostel room where the fate of a candidate is decided.

Sources said in the last Pusu election, boarders of BN College, Patna Women’s College and Magadh Mahila College played an important role in the victory of Divyanshu Bhardwaj as the president of Pusu in February this year.

On earlier occasions, police have seized weapons such as wooden sticks, hockey sticks and crackers meant for preparing bombs during raids before election.

Gaurav Anand, a student of Patna Science College, said: “If the PU administration checks the activities of boarders, half of the problem in the election will be sorted out as it is the boarders who create nuisance.”

Apart from conducting raids at PU hostels, in another development on Thursday, the All India Students’ Federation (AISF) the students’ organization of Communist Party of India (CPI), All India Students’ Association (AISA), the students organization of CPI(ML) and Chhatra RJD have decided to join hands in the election.

As per agreement between three students’ organization, the AISF will contest the post of president, Chhatra RJD will contest for vice-president and treasurer, while AISA will contest for general secretary and joint secretary posts.

AISF state secretary Sushil Kumar said: “We have decided to join hands to check the spilt of our votes.”

Sources said the three parties have joined hands as in the last students’ election all three student organisation had contested the elections separately, but none of them were able to win any seats.
