The resident doctor’s association of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Monday observed a daylong strike in support of their various pending demands. Healthcare services provided by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) were partially hit as members of the association sat on a strike. The OPD and indoor was badly hit as residents doctors did not turn up for work. However, medical facilities at ICU and emergency were not affected.

Association president Dr Vinay Kumar said: “Today was a token strike. We have put forward our demands to the AIIMS administration and director Dr Prabhat Kumar Singh has assured us to take up our demands. If our demands are not accepted within 10 days, we will go on a strike.”

Last month, the association members went on a strike after former president of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Kanhaiya Kumar, and his supporters allegedly abused an intern and security guards demanding security for doctors. The association withdraw their strike after the AIIMS administration lodged an FIR against Kanhaiya and his supporters. Kanhaiya had gone to meet AISF general secretary Sushil Kumar admitted at the hospital where the fracas occurred.

The association, after the incident, had demanded security beef-up at the health hub, but even after more than a fortnight, the AIIMS administration is yet to upgrade security. Dr Prabhat said: “The junior doctor in the morning went on strike but after a meeting with the AIIMS administration they resumed duty from 2.30pm. Healthcare facilities were not affected much due to the strike.”

Dr Vinay said: “We have demanded a high-level security for all doctors dealing in trauma, emergency and OPD. We also demand establishment of a quick response team for emergency.”
