The ICSE (Class X) and ISC (Class XII) improvement exams will begin on Wednesday.
The ICSE exams will continue till July 19 and the ISC till July 13.
The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) decided to introduce the improvement exams from 2023 to give a chance to candidates “to improve their performance in any one subject of their choice”.
The improvement exams will be held in the school of the convener (principal in charge of exam-related activities in a particular zone) of the respective zones.
“Since the number of students appearing for improvement is less compared to the main examination, it is convenient to conduct the exam in one school in a zone. An improvement exam is good for the students because they are getting a second chance,” said Mousumi Saha, principal, National English School, and a convener for ISC.
In the Calcutta region, there are nine zones for ISC and 11 zones for ICSE. Each zone has one convener.
“The convener will download the question papers sent to them online by the council. The printouts will be given to the supervising examiner to be distributed among the students,” said Keya Sinha, principal, National Gems Higher Secondary School, and a convener of one of the zones for the ISC.
Schools have made the same arrangements as they did during the main exams so that the sanctity of the examination is maintained.
“We have allotted a segregated place for conducting the exams so that examinees are not disturbed,” said Seema Sapru, principal of The Heritage School.
The examinees have been given fresh admit cards.
Across schools, students are appearing for improvement exams, some because they did not do well and some want to better their marks.
The higher of the two marks obtained by the candidates in the two examinations — the main and the improvement — will be considered the final score, the council has said.
The council had announced the improvement exams soon after the ICSE-ISC results were published in May. It had said the improvement exams would be held in July.
“After the day’s exam the answer scripts will be sent to the council. We would be following the same rules as we did during the main exam,” said Jayanta Banerjee, principal, Orient Day School and a convener for the ICSE exams.
