Oksana Baulina, a Russian journalist who had reported on government corruption in her native country, was killed in Kyiv while filming the destruction wrought by Russian shelling in the capital, her employer said on Wednesday.

She worked for The Insider, an independent investigative news website that is critical of the Kremlin and, like many news outlets, has been labelled by the Kremlin as a foreign agent. The Insider, based in Latvia, said that Baulina and another person, whom it did not name, were killed in a rocket strike, while two people accompanying her were injured.

Known among her friends for her courage, gentle manner and tenacity, Baulina, who had been reporting in Kyiv and Lviv, previously had worked for The Anti-Corruption Foundation.

According to Coda Story, a news website where she had worked as a video producer, Baulina was once briefly jailed when Russian police stormed the headquarters of the Anti-Corruption Foundation while she was coordinating a live broadcast from a nationwide rally. She had spent a decade working for some of Russia’s top glossy magazines.
