Surgeon G.M. Kenderdine, who was in charge of the first mental asylum in Calcutta, passed away on this day.
The institution was recorded in the proceedings of Calcutta Medical Board just after Lord Cornwallis (1786-1793) was appointed Governor-General. It was meant for Europeans.

The proceedings mentioned that Kenderdine wanted to build a new house for the patients.
The medical board recommended the establishment of a standard asylum.
William Dick was appointed assistant surgeon at a salary of Rs 200 per month. Dick would suggest the setting up of a mental asylum for which he would pay.
A building for female patients was later approved at a rent of Rs 200 per month.
