On this day, Amrita Bazar Patrika, published from Calcutta, carried a report on Nazi loot being discovered.

The report, sent from London and dated May 13, said: “Loot from five years of Nazi pillage of Europe is coming to light. So far in the Second Army area 18 giant packing cases full of jewellery and other valuables worth hundreds of thousands — possibly millions — sterling have been found hidden in cellars. It was mostly the property of Dutch and Jewish families…

“A brick factory near Hamburg owned by a prominent Nazi official paid one million marks profit last year on a total paid-up capital of three million marks by the simple expedient of drawing unpaid labour from a nearby concentration camp.”
