Sources said on February 19, the local Trinamul leader Mondal was seated at a tea stall in Bishnupur, Diamond Harbour, when three on a bike fired at him, leading to his death. Two of them were earlier arrested by the police.

A probe revealed they had spoken to Ujjal several times, said sources. “We have come to know Ujjal Sarkar was hired by someone to murder Sadhan Mondal,” said a police officer.

Bhujiapara residents said Sarkar ran a private school with wife Namita. “He went to Calcutta on February 18 for work and was back the next day. He wasn’t involved in any crime,” said Namita.
