Malda police arrested two persons with 2.6kg of brown sugar, and a third person based on their interrogation, on Friday night.
One of the accused, Md Waqar Yunus, had on him a police ID card of Manipur. Police are trying to ascertain if the card is authentic or fake.
The seized narcotic was brought from Manipur, police said.
On Friday night, police acted on a tip-off to intercept a sedan near the toll plaza in Gazole on the outskirts of Malda. Seated were Yunus and Md Irshad Ali, both from Manipur. Based on their interrogation, Arif Sheikh of Murshidabad, who had come to Malda to allegedly receive the consignment, was also arrested.
The narcotics was found in an improvised chamber near the foot-rest of the passenger’s seat beside the driver.
Timber seized
Foresters of the Lataguri forest range intercepted a truck last night on NH27 near Teesta bridge on the outskirts of Jalpaiguri town and seized illegal timber worth around Rs 30 lakh.
“There were around 1,000 logs of pine and debdaru in the truck on way to Bihar from Dimapur,” said a forester.
Two persons, both residents of Uttar Pradesh, were arrested in this connection.
Murder
Shibranus Toppo, 42, a resident of Gayerkata tea estate under Banarhat police station of Jalpaiguri district, was hacked to death on Saturday morning allegedly by his cousin Michael Kujur.
Sources said that the victim was sleeping at that time.
Shibranus was rushed to the rural hospital in Dhupguri where doctors pronounced him dead. Police arrested Michael. Investigations have started.
