Calcutta police issue traffic diversions from bifurcation of Hastings ramp of Vidyasagar Setu for Urs

Police have also drawn up a list of roads where movements of goods vehicles will remain restricted between 7pm on Sunday and 6am on Monday to avoid traffic congestion for the devotees

Movement of vehicles headed towards the city will be diverted from the bifurcation of the Hastings ramp of Vidyasagar Setu from 7pm on Sunday till 6am on Monday to facilitate movement of devotees for the Urs festival — popularly celebrated by Muslims, police said.

A notification issued by Calcutta’s police commissioner Manoj Verma said vehicles headed for Howrah along the setu from the city will be diverted from Ghorapass and 11 Furlong gate during the same period.

Vehicles headed for the Hastings ramp and the approach to the Hastings ramp will be diverted from several intersections around Kidderpore and Hastings.

Officers said the necessary deployment of police would be made around these crossings and points of diversion before hand so that motorists don’t face trouble.

The police have also drawn up a list of roads where movements of goods vehicles will remain restricted between 7pm on Sunday and 6am on Monday to avoid traffic congestion for the devotees.

Some of these roads include the following:

“Vehicles headed towards Garden Reach and Dr Sudhir Bose Road along Kidderpore Road will not be allowed to come near the Hastings crossing,” said ane officer.

“Signages and banners would be put up to help motorists understand the diverted routes.”

On Saturday, officers in charge of several traffic guards across the city’s southern pockets were instructed to make necessary arrangements so that motorists get to know about the proposed diversion plans well in advance while moving down AJC Bose Road, Belvedere Road, Diamond Harbour Road and Red Road.

“The mobile display boards will be used to flash notifications about the diversions from the morning at different points and key intersections,” the officer said.
