Knife attack on mother and son in Balurghat

The duo had to face the brunt for protesting against a man’s lewd remarks at girls on Saturday night

A woman and her son were allegedly attacked with a knife in Balurghat, in South Dinajpur district, for protesting against a man’s lewd remarks at girls on Saturday night.

Gouranga Mohanta, the accused, has been arrested. Swapna Sarkar Mohanta and her son Shirshendu were discharged from hospital on Sunday.

Gouranga, a trader and resident of Mohantapara in Balurghat town, would allegedly often pass lewd remarks at girls.

He allegedly did it again on Saturday night but this time Swapna and her son protested. This led to an altercation and Gouranga was reportedly joined by Biswachandi and Rocky, his nephews.

Gouranga ran into his house and allegedly came out with a knife and stabbed Swapna and her son. Residents rushed them to hospital.

A search is on for Gouranga’s nephews.
