CPM leaders in Malda have accused functionaries of a Trinamul-run panchayat of issuing job cards of the 100-day work scheme against money.

They have filed complaints at Tulsihata panchayat, the rural body in question, the block office and Harishchandrapur police station, seeking probe. “Some in the panchayat have charged Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 for a job card,” said Ainul Haque, a CPM block leader.

Shakuntala Singha, who heads the Trinamul-run Tulsihata panchayat, professed ignorance but said the veracity of the charge would be checked.

“We will now call all the new beneficiaries of the cards to check the veracity of the charge. If any of the charges are proved, we will take legal steps against all those who issued the job cards against cash,” she said.
