Civic volunteer found dead in jute field

Bachan Mondal left home on Sunday night and his body was found on Monday some 500 metres from home

A civic volunteer posted at Malda district’s Baishnabnagar police station was found dead in a jute field at a village under the same police station area on Monday.

There were multiple injury marks on the body of Bachan Mondal, 30, resident of Mirzachak village.

Police suspect murder.

Mondal left home on Sunday night. His body was found on Monday some 500 metres from home. His sister Sima said he had received several calls during dinner on Sunday and left hurriedly around 10.15pm. “Preliminary probe suggests murder. We are also waiting for the autopsy report,” said Malda SP Pradeep Kumar Yadav.

Bangladeshi arrested

Acting on a tip off, troops of the 6th battalion of the BSF posted in Cooch Behar district intercepted a Bangladeshi national on Monday while he was moving through a locality of the district.

Tobarak Miyan of Habibganj district of Bangladesh had infiltrated through the international border and was in search of a job, sources said. He was handed over to the Kuchlibari police station.

The BSF also carried out anti-smuggling drives in different areas along the Indo-Bangla border under the north Bengal frontier since last Friday and seized a number of contraband items including cattle, narcotic and cough syrup bottles worth around Rs 7.37 lakh, BSF sources said.
