The special CBI court in Asansol on Wednesday extended by a fortnight the jail custody of Birbhum district Trinamul Congress president Anubrata Mondal who had been arrested in a cattle smuggling case.

He was produced in the court on Wednesday after his 14-day judicial custody had ended.

He was lodged at the Asansol correctional home. Mondal is scheduled to be produced in the court again on October 5, but as the court will remain closed for the Puja vacation, his next appearance will be on October 29. Anirban Guha Thakurta, the lawyer of the Trinamul leader, said he had moved a bail plea for his client and claimed that the CBI had failed to establish any direct link to Mondal in the case. Mondal did not respond to media questions outside the court.
