Calcutta Regional Passport Office's enquiry counter to remain closed

The Calcutta Regional Passport office has said the enquiry counter of the Regional Passport Office, Calcutta, will remain closed from March 19 because of the coronavirus till further orders. The status of enquiry-appointment will be updated on www.passportindia.gov.in.

2 injured in auto accident

A passenger and an autorickshaw driver were injured when the three-wheeler allegedly collided with a stationary vehicle on Rashbehari Avenue on Friday. Pritam Chandra Haldar, 28, the driver, and one of the passengers, Anindita Shah, 46, were admitted to hospital.

Student arrested

A college student was arrested for his alleged links with Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba on Friday. Manajirul Islam Mandal’s arrest followed the statement of a student who was arrested on Thursday for her alleged role in radicalising youths through WhatsApp groups.

Market checks

The enforcement branch of the Calcutta police conducted checks and raids at markets across the city selling vegetables and meat to check and control alleged stockpiling of goods and to prevent hoarding.

Snatching arrest

A 30-year-old man was arrested on Friday for allegedly snatching a gold chain from the neck of a woman on Kabi Mohitlal Road earlier this month. The chain was recovered from Raju Das, the arrested.

Fake note cuffs

A 27-year-old Malda-based man was arrested on charges of dealing in fake currency notes on Friday. Safikul Islam was arrested on Dufferin Road and notes with face value of Rs 5 lakh were seized from him.

Drug haul

A 52-year-old man was arrested for alleged possession of charas weighing over 1.5kg on Lal Mohan Bhattacharjee Road on Friday.
