Justice Rajasekhar Mantha of Calcutta High Court on Thursday declined to issue a stay on Saturday’s Trinamul rally proposed near Shantikunj, the residence of the leader of the Opposition and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari, at Contai in East Midnapore.

“To hold a rally or meeting is the fundamental right of any political party,” Justice Mantha held.

The court, however, imposed certain guidelines for Trinamul’s rally at the venue where its national general secretary Abhisekh Banerjee is expected.

It asked East Midnapore SP and DM to ensure that organisers obeyed sound limit norms. It asked the administration and Trinamul to ensure no party member entered Shantikunj, and the Adhikaris were not barred from entering or leaving home.

Adhikari had moved court seeking a stay on Trinamul’s rally, claiming its aim was to harass his family.
