A 35-year-old woman was killed after a bus hit her when she was trying to cross the road near the New Town bus stop on Wednesday evening.

The bus (Andul station-Eco Space) hit Meenakshi Mishra around 5.10pm, an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said.

The findings of a preliminary investigation suggest she tried to cross the road when the signal for pedestrians was red, the officer said.

Traffic policemen posted at the crossing had tried to warn Mishra but she was glued to her mobile phone and she could not hear their shouts, the officer said.

“The woman slumped to the road after being hit. She started bleeding from the head... we immediately took her to a private hospital nearby,” he said.

A hospital doctor who had examined Mishra said she was unconscious when she was brought in. “She had lost a lot of blood and we could not revive her,” the doctor said.

The bus was intercepted a few metres from the accident spot. The driver has been booked for rash and negligent driving, causing grievous hurt by endangering lives of others and causing mischief.

Another officer said CCTV footage of the area showed the woman trying to cross the airport-bound flank of Major Arterial Road near the New Town bus stop when the signal for vehicles was green. She came between two vehicles before the bus hit her, the officer said.

“Half the road accidents can be averted if pedestrians follow traffic rules. No one should attempt to cross a road when the signal for vehicles is green,” a traffic police officer said.
