The BJP organised the meeting in Boroitola, a locality in Tufanganj subdivision, where leaders spoke on plans for rural elections.

As Ghosh’s motorcade passed Tufanganj-Nakkatigach road in the afternoon, Trinamul supporters wielded black flags and shouted “go back” slogans. Cops controlled the situation.

Around 500 BJP supporters were present at the meeting for which the party allegedly did not take the administration’s permission.

“The BJP blatantly violated rules by holding a meeting during exams. There are at least four examination centres nearby,” said Trinamul veteran Rabindranath Ghosh.

“Parties should refrain from holding such events during exams. What the BJP did was utterly irresponsible,” said CPM leader Tamsher Ali.

Ghosh said: “We hold political activities around the year. I don’t believe examinees faced any problem because of the meeting.”

Subhasish Choudhury, a district BJP leader, said they did not use loudhailers but “smaller” sound boxes and that the meeting started after the exam ended.
