Birds rescued by BSF in India-Bangladesh border

Several birds, including parakeets and mynas (in picture above), were rescued while they were allegedly being smuggled into Bangladesh on Tuesday. Border Security Force personnel posted along the south Bengal frontier of the India-Bangladesh border rescued the birds. The men who were allegedly trying to smuggle the birds were detained and handed over to police.

New coaches

The Howrah-Barbil Jan Shatabdi Express will be run with Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches from March 6. LHB coaches have improved features compared with traditional coaches made at the Integral Coach Factory, said a railway official.

Booster pumping station

The Calcutta Municipal Corporation will build a semi-underground booster pumping station on Middle Road in Garfa. Mayor Firhad Hakim laid the foundation stone of the 27-lakh-litre-capacity station in ward 104 on Tuesday. A CMC official said the construction will take 18 months.

Road sign repair

The Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority will repair and refurbish road signs in Salt Lake Sector V. A survey will be conducted to find areas where signage are in a bad shape so they can be repaired, an official said.

A commemorative philatelic special cover (in picture above) was released in the 120th birth anniversary year of eminent linguist and literary historiographer Sukumar Sen at a programme organised by the linguistics department of Calcutta University on Tuesday. Pabitra Sarkar was the chief guest on the occasion.

Body found

The charred body of a 73-year-old woman was found in the garage of her house in Bangalpara in Naihati, North 24-Parganas, on Tuesday. Neighbours of Krishna De, the deceased, spotted the body and alerted cops. Police have started an unnatural death case.

Rape charge

A 15-year-old Class X student was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly raping a four-year-old girl in Nadia. The girl’s family alleged they had been threatened with dire consequences if they filed a complaint. They still lodged the complaint with police on Monday.

Bamboo fence

The New Town Kolkata Development Authority will put up a bamboo fence around a canal near New Town’s AA market, an official said. The tender process for the work has been initiated.

CET exam result declared

Results of the Common Entrance Test (CET) for army recruitment, which was held in Behrampore on February 23, were declared on Tuesday. The results have been uploaded on www.joinindianarmy.nic.in and are also available on IVRS no 03322236897.

CU lecture

Padmanabhan Balaram, a biochemist and a former director of the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, will deliver the Dibyendu Pal Memorial Lecture at Calcutta University on March 11. The Calcutta University Teachers’ Association is organising the lecture.

Seminar

Calcutta University will hold a national seminar on Methods in Applied Mathematics on March 19 and 20. The department of applied mathematics is organising the seminar.

Road repair

The Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority will repair roads on a stretch leading to the Wipro inter-section from the College More crossing, an official of the agency said. The median divider will also be repaired. The tender process has been initiated.
