District police have arrested six persons, including five residents of Maharashtra, from various locations in the past five days in connection with a robbery on May 11 that had taken place at a jeweller’s home in a locality under Bamangola police station.
Police also recovered some of the stolen gold, silver and cash from the arrested Gopal Ghosh of Malda’s Sahapur, and the rest five from Maharashtra, Amol Babar and Rushikesh Rajgude of Solapur, Ravi Shinde and Maruti Karel of Satara and Anil Shinde of Sangli.
Two others are still on police radar and will be booked if their involvement in the crime is established, sources informed.
On May 11, a gang of dacoits had barged into the house of Dwijen Barman, a jeweller in Kantipara under Bamangola police station, and had decamped with gold, silver, cash and a two-wheeler.
Police initiated a probe, collected inputs from CCTV footage, local habitants and initially arrested Ghosh.
During interrogation, he revealed that the gang is led by Amol Babar.
“The probe continued and we came to know that Anil Shinde is wanted in a robbery case in Maharashtra. He had taken shelter in Assam. Our team went to Assam and could nab Anil and Amol,” said a police officer.
Maruti and Ravi were in Purulia town and were picked up from there.
“Rushikesh was hiding here in Malda. He was arrested from Pakuahat, which is also under Bamangola police station,” the officer added.
Police have also recovered 6.127kg silver, 64.930gm gold ornaments, Rs 70,000 in cash and the two-wheeler from those arrested, sources said.
BSF arrests
Troops of the 176 battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) in Darjeeling district intercepted a Bangladeshi national on Sunday while he was allegedly trying to infiltrate into India. Md Abdul Rahim, a resident of Rangamati district in Bangladesh, was handed over to Phansidewa police.
Personnel of the 61 battalion of BSF deployed at the international border in South Dinajpur arrested an Indian woman on Sunday while she was allegedly trying to smuggle contraband items to Bangladesh. She was handed over to Hilli police.
The BSF also carried out anti-smuggling drives near the borders across north Bengal on Sunday and Monday and seized contraband items including cattle and cough syrup bottles worth around Rs 4.93 lakh.
