A 28-year-old Trinamul Congress worker was found dead in a deserted area in Cooch Behar district on Sunday night.

District Trinamul leaders and family members have alleged that BJP supporters murdered Dulal Biswas. The family filed a complaint with Ghoksadanga police.

Biswas hadn’t returned home at Putimari village in the Mathabhanga subdivision on Sunday night after attending a feast organised by Trinamul. The family started searching for him and Biswas was found lying dead in a deserted location at the village.

Arati, the deceased’s mother, said: “Around three months ago, my son had an altercation with local BJP workers. He had filed a police complaint and later, these persons threatened him. We suspect they strangled my son.”

The villagers said local Trinamul workers had arranged a feast on Sunday night to celebrate the party’s victory in the panchayat elections. Biswas attended the event and left for home.

“While Biswas was returning home, he was murdered. Some BJP-backed miscreants are behind the crime. The police should immediately arrest them,” said Avijit De Bhowmik, the district Trinamul president of Cooch Behar.

The BJP denied the charge. “There are multiple factions of Trinamul and the party is plagued with acute infighting. We hope the police will find out the truth. Trinamul leaders are unnecessarily pointing the finger at us,” said Sukumar Roy, the district BJP president.

The police said Biswas’s body had no external injury mark. “We are waiting for the post-mortem report. Our officers are collecting more information about the deceased,” said Amit Verma, the additional superintendent of police, Mathabhanga.
