In Darjeeling's remote Singtam village, a community did the unthinkable — villagers got together to build a vital new 130-foot-long concrete motorable bridge — a lifeline that governments have failed to build in decades.

The new bridge replaces an old and treacherous suspension bridge, a relic of the British Raj. The old bridge — the only link connecting Singtam village with the rest of Darjeeling — posed a constant risk for locals.
