No end to Manipur crisis — What triggered Jiribam violence and reimposition of AFSPA

Fresh stroke of violence has hit an already volatile Manipur. Mobs in Imphal valley districts stormed residences of ministers and destroyed properties. Internet shutdown and curfews were imposed in Imphal and other hill districts. The draconian AFSPA was reimposed in the state. At least 20 people, including 11 suspected Kuki militants, were killed in less than two weeks.

Subsequent hostage situation and killing of infants brought Manipur's ethnically diverse Jiribam that was largely untouched by ethnic clashes, on the boil.

Manipur is currently heavily guarded by personnel of Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). Since May 2023, despite curfews, internet shutdown and heavy deployment, the violence in Manipur never stopped...
