Death, despair and devastation still shroud the ground of a Satsang (a spiritual gathering) in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras where 121 devotees were killed in a stampede. Self-styled godman Bhole Baba's satsang had permission to host 80,000 people but crammed at least 2.5 lakh instead.

Residents alleg that the government didn’t want to believe that the stampede was a result of mismanagement by Bhole Baba and the district administration. A day after the stampede, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath said, “We cannot deny that such incidents can only be an accident. Even if this is an accident, who is responsible? If this is a conspiracy, then who is behind it?”
