Mamata Banerjee on Monday claimed that Narendra Modi couldn’t do one per cent of what she had done as the chief minister and said she was ready to crawl on the ground and apologise if she ever spoke lies.

The Bengal chief minister held two public meetings, one in Cooch Behar and the other at Nagrakata, on Monday. The campaigning for the first phase of Parliament elections in Bengal will end on Tuesday evening.

“After working for five years, the ex-prime minister is seeking clarification from me. Who is he to question me? He should instead clarify as to what he has done in the past five years. How dare he do it? Whatever I have done for the state, he can’t even do one per cent of it,” Mamata told a public meeting at Rasmela Ground in Cooch Behar.

Modi had addressed a BJP election meeting at the same venue on Sunday.

The Trinamul chief also took on Modi for his remarks on the venue. On Sunday, the Prime Minister had said Mamata was acting in a “childish” manner and tried to prevent him from holding the meeting in Cooch Behar.

“We had booked the ground earlier for three days from April 7 to 9. They (BJP) applied for the ground later. But we allowed you to hold the meeting. Our workers were refusing but I told them to let the BJP hold the meeting. Instead of thanking us, he was criticising us. This is disappointing,” she said.

Over one lakh people were present to hear Mamata in Cooch Behar and the crowd was larger than that of Modi’s Sunday’s meeting.

Mamata also tried to nullify Modi’s allegation that she had not done much for the region when she was the railway minister. Holding a sheaf papers, she went on narrating the names of trains and railway projects which she had announced in north Bengal as the railway minister.

The Trinamul chief again dared Modi to come and face her. “If I am speaking lies, I am ready to crawl on the ground and apologise to people. But if the same happens in your case, you will also have to do it. Earlier, you posed as a chaiwala and now, you say you are a chowkidar. We don’t need a chowkidar but a proper leader in our country,” said the Trinamul supremo.

Earlier on Monday, Mamata spoke at another public meeting in Nagrakata in the western Dooars.

“The Centre and the ex-prime minister have not done anything for tea garden workers other than delivering empty promises. Ahead of the elections, they started coming here and are trying to win support of the tea population by making false promises again,” said Mamata.
