The Trinamul Congress on Saturday named L.R. Sangma as its candidate for the Tura Lok Sabha constituency.

Biswajit Deb, co-observer of All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) for the northeastern states, and Trinamul Rajya Sabha MP Nandimul Haque handed over election-related documents to Sangma.

Sangma, a member of the party’s Garo hills unit, is a social worker.

Deb said the Trinamul earlier had former Lok Sabha Speaker (late) Purno Agitok Sangma as its MP from Tura.

Sangma had contested and won from the Tura in 2004 on a Trinamul ticket.

However, two years later, he quit the party to rejoin the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

“People of Tura Lok Sabha constituency know Trinamul and our leader Mamata Banerjee. Our party leaders will be coming to Tura to campaign for its candidate in the next few days,” Deb said.
