The incessant rain and cyclonic storms, which hit Goalpara district continuously for three days last week, have created flash floods in the district. A public works department (PWD) road in the town was also washed away on Friday evening.

Agia Road to DN Sinha Stadium Road in Ward No. 16 near Goalpara Public School was completely inundated for the last three days. On Friday evening, a huge portion of the road washed away.

A section of local people alleged that the road was washed away only because of its poor construction.

“The road was constructed with political interference by the close aides of the East Goalpara legislator (Abul Kalam Rasheed Alam). Thus, the PWD estimate was compromised,” alleged a local resident.

A PWD source said, “The road did not have a water outlet and a culvert which is most necessary to let rain water flow. A section of land owners prevented the department from constructing the culvert. As a result, the area was inundated and the portion of the road washed away.”

Taking cognisance of the matter on Saturday, Balijana revenue circle officer Banti Talukdar, on behalf of the deputy commissioner, took stock of the road and the flooded area.

The Habri river in Krishnai is overflowing following the incessant rain over three days and the agricultural areas in Sutarpara and Garomari villages in Matia are completely submerged.

The flash floods have damaged paddy crops which were about to be harvested.
