BJP seeks arrest of assailants

The party’s booth-level president of Margangpunji area and jhum cultivator and his wife were beaten up by unidentified persons

The Hailakandi district BJP demanded the arrest of miscreants involved in the assault of a booth-level president of the party and his wife.

The party’s booth-level president of Margangpunji area of Dinanathpur gaon panchayat of Hailakandi district in South Assam and jhum cultivator Subhas Tripura and his wife Mandadhari Tripura were beaten up by unidentified persons on April 5 when they were engaged in jhum cultivation.

Tripura alleged that a gang of five, led by Eklim Uddin, prevented them from farming in the hills and beat them up mercilessly. Local villagers came to their rescue and the men fled the area.

The villagers took them to Katlicherra Primary health centre in a critical condition. They were referred to SK Roy Civil Hospital in Hailakandi town.

Sources said they have received multiple injuries.

Tripura lives in Dinanathpur and originally hails from Dima Hasao district.

Katlicherra mondal president Pranab Deb submitted a complaint in Katlicherra police station and urged the police to take immediate action to arrest the culprits. The officer in-charge of Katlicherra police station, Nirmal Kanti Biswas, informed the team that the investigation is under way.
