The Coordination Committee Against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CCA) has submitted a memorandum to the chief secretary and director-general of police, Assam, demanding the immediate release of KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi.

In the memorandum, the committee wrote that Akhil had been granted bail in almost all the cases, including the NIA case, but despite that he was rearrested by Sivasagar and then Dibrugarh police. At this time when prisoners are being released on bail as the coronavirus has hit all the regions of the country, Akhil and members of his organisation are still not being released on bail.

The memorandum added that since it was a time of crisis, the government should make arrangements to release Akhil and other members of the KMSS on parole as soon as possible.

Akhil has been under judicial custody since December 27, 2019, under allegations that he has links with Maoists.

He was first arrested by Assam police on December 12 from Jorhat and on December 17, he was handed over to the NIA and was in 10-day NIA custody. He had been arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

So far, he has been granted bail in all the major cases in Assam, including the NIA case (no 13/19) , Guwahati police crime branch case (1/20), Gaurisagar police station case (no 154/219) in Sivasagar district and Chabua police station case (no 290/19).
