Take a walk around Kolkata through a historical lens with these iconic spots

Find out what shaped the freedom struggle and take a look back at history this Sunday

On Independence Day, many historical spots around the city will be closed, but that doesn’t mean you can’t explore Kolkata’s rich history this weekend. You can still visit some of the city’s iconic landmarks and museums. If some places are closed, plan a visit on the following weekend.

• Victoria Memorial Hall: This is one of the city’s most famous landmarks one shouldn’t miss. Spend time wandering through its beautiful halls and gardens. It’s open on weekends from 10am to 6pm
• Jorasanko Thakur Bari: Visit the birthplace of Rabindranath Tagore that offers a glimpse into the life of the noted poet. It’s open on the weekends from 10.30am to 4.30pm
• Indian Museum: With its extensive galleries, spending some time here is a good idea. It’s open  on the weekends from 10 am to 6 pm
• Alipore Jail Museum: A significant symbol of the freedom movement, this museum highlights the struggles and atrocities faced by freedom fighters. It’s open Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6pm
• Netaji Bhawan: Explore the Elgin Road residence of one of India’s greatest freedom fighters that even preserves the marks of his footsteps from when he escaped house arrest. It’s open even on the weekends from 11am to 6pm
