Find yourself some ‘Stollen’ indulgence this Christmas

Head to Brown’s bakery for a festive treat of the famous German Christmas bread and more

Plum cakes and fruit cakes might be a quintessential Christmas treat for Kolkatans, but there’s always something new to explore. This Christmas, take your tastebuds on an international journey, all the to the land of the black forest cake — Germany!

The city’s popular bakery Brown’s has a traditional treat this Yuletide. The stollen, a German Christmas bread is a fruit bread packed with candied or dried fruits, nuts, and flavoured with warm winter spices and a hint of citrus usually from fruit zest. The Kolkata bakery, café and artisanal caterer are bringing the Stollen to you this winter.

Also known as Weihnachtsstollen or Christstollen during Christmas, the Brown’s version will have rum-soaked fruits, nuts, and all the hearty, warm goodness of the traditional recipe, plus a little surprise! “We are making authentic Stollen with a log of house-made marzipan baked into it,” said owner Vanita Tondon.

If you want to explore but don’t want to invest right away, then the Stollen is also available by the slice at the cafe so you can sample some before you buy the log.
