Sunday Classics: Chicken Mughlai Porota at Dakshinapan

A Kolkata street-food classic you’ll keep coming back for

Published 07.11.21, 12:01 AM

It might be safe to say that every culture has a version of a bread-and-meat dish. We Bengalis couldn’t be happier with one of ours, which is the Mughlai Porota. A hand-rolled paratha (or as we say, porota) stuffed with a spicy minced meat filling and fried till crisp, flaky and golden.

There are many great iterations of this classic dish to be found in Kolkata, and one of them is at a great place tucked away behind Dakshinapan Shopping Complex in Dhakuria. Near the back gate of this shopping complex, which was one of the first of its time in the city, is a street-food stall that makes a great chicken Mughlai. The porota is the right mix of crunchy and soft, and the chicken filling is generous and flavourful. It’s served in the classic way, cut into squares and with a side of aloo’r torkari and spicy chilli sauce. Follow up with a kulfi for the whole experience.
