With Holi just around the corner and the long weekend fast approaching, it’s time to plan ahead and make the most of the holiday. For those who want to avoid the celebrations or may be allergic to colours, escaping to the outskirts of town could be the perfect solution. If you haven’t made any bookings yet and are still figuring out what to do, My Kolkata has some exciting options for you to spend a peaceful getaway. Take a look...

Nihar on the Ganges

A view of the Ganga, the quiet of the outdoors and a pristinely well maintained property — sound like something you are interested in? Then head over to Nihar on the Ganges on Niharika Ghat, Sukchar. This heritage bungalow not only offers a peaceful retreat but also arranges various tours to nearby attractions in Barrackpore, Panihati, Kharad — and a tour of the Hooghly Bank as well. With an extensive food menu, including Indian and a Continental options, there is a lot of scope for a good adda at Nihar on the Ganges. The food package for a whole day is Rs 1,700 per head, including a mutton dish and fish options for the Bengali palate. Rooms at Nihar on the Ganges start from Rs 8,000 and it could be a wonderful getaway option that is just far enough from the city, yet not too far that you need a whole day to travel. And while you are there, you can always enjoy the beautiful view of the Ganges, relishing your tea or cold drinks, fish fry, pasta, pizza, burgers and more at Sunset Travel Cafe. Also make sure to grab a bite from the iconic Dada Boudi Biryani in Barrackpore on your way back home.

Holi is synonymous with colours, but that doesn’t mean you have to join in the messy celebrations. Instead you can enjoy a delightful Holi day by visiting Khirai, known as Bengal’s very own Valley of Flowers. Just a two-hour drive from the city, Khirai offers a stunning array of scents and colours in its beautiful flower gardens. Halt at Azad Hind in Uluberia for breakfast. Once you reach Khirai, don’t forget to make a reel for Instagram or take as many selfies as you want with Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye Hum from Silsila playing in the background. If you are drawn to experiencing the cultural heritage of Bengal, just drive 48km away from Kolkata and you will find yourself at prominent Bengali novelist Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s house in Deulti. Sarat Smriti Mandir is now a house museum of sorts — all with his used furniture — and the home where the author spent 12 years of his life. Do check if it’s open before visiting on Holi or you can simply lose yourself in the quaint and serene surroundings of the village. Situated on the banks of the Rupnarayan river, this rural village offers a mystical escape from busy city life. Whether you’re looking for a quiet romantic getaway or seeking inspiration, a day trip to Deulti is just perfect for you. After all, this is where the stories of Devdas, Mahesh and Dena Paona were born, making it an ideal place to get your creative juices flowing. Make sure to explore the other architectural and historical locations this rural getaway has to offer. Since Deulti is quite close to Kolaghat, you can stop by at either Azad Hind or Sher-e-Punjab to enjoy some dhaba food on your way back home.

A 15-minute walk from Bakkhali beach, through a trove of mangrove trees, will lead you to Henry’s Island. The combination of the beach and the mangroves offers the best of nature. Don’t miss the Sundari Tourist Complex for a fascinating view of the sea and mangrove trees. The water is inviting, so you might find yourself dipping your feet or even taking a swim. You can even have your lunch at Sundari Tourist Complex.
