An increasing number of dengue cases are being reported from Salt Lake, Baguiati, Teghoria and Ashwininagar, among other places, prompting the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation to launch an anti-mosquito drive.

An official in the civic body's health department said around 25 dengue cases had been reported from 41 wards from January till September. The figure from September till October 26 was 37. The dengue virus is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which can breed in a spoonful of water.

On Tuesday, a team from the civic body conducted checks at different places in Salt Lake.

The drive started at the Karunamoyee bus terminus, where the team found garbage dumped in several pockets.

The team, led by Pranay Kumar Ray, the member of the civic body's board of administrators in charge of the health department, found puddles as well as water stored in large drums in front of eateries in the terminus. “We have found mosquito larvae in the stagnant pools,” said Ray.

The team checked several houses and lanes in DL and EE Blocks. “Mosquito larvae were found in water accumulated in used plates and sanitaryware. We also found water inside several flower pots kept on balconies of houses,” said Ray.
