Anjan Chatterjee’s heart is always in Kolkata during Pujo, whether he can be present in the city or not. In the first of a series on people’s stories of Durga Puja, My Kolkata got a peek into what Pujo celebrations present and past look like for the foodpreneur, and more.

My Kolkata: Do you usually spend Durga Puja in Kolkata? Which pandals do you visit? And where do you go if you’re not in the city during this time?

Anjan Chatterjee: Well, my heart lies in Kolkata during Pujo, but because of work I hardly ever get to travel to Kolkata. I usually avoid going to the pandals, largely because of the enormous traffic of people. My happiness comes from spending time with friends back in Mumbai and if possible, I visit a pandal or two there.

Any special outfit(s) for Puja this year?

Well, nothing in particular. Usually on Ashtami, I wear a white pyjama-panjabi. I like to keep it simple.

Is there a special event or tradition that you follow during Durga Puja?

All days are special during Durga Puja. On Ashtami, I have a small puja at my residence in Mumbai followed by bhog for friends, family, and my entire office staff.

Do you have a special memory associated with Durga Puja in Kolkata or elsewhere?

There are many, most of which would take me to my college days and childhood — like visiting Kumartuli with my father, or rock e boshe adda with friends.

What is your favourite Durga Puja-time food?

Khichudi with labra, and alu dum is a must. Of course, then there is Kolkata’s biryani and fish fry.

One power of Durga you wish you had and why?

Her shakti or power to be alert, calm and be fearless. At some point in life, we are all afraid to make decisions or take a big step and think a lot about its adversities. If our mind can be calm, be positive and fearless then any battle — no matter how big it may be — can be won.
