A youth in his late-20s was arrested for allegedly murdering two of his acquainatnces in Agarpara, on the northern fringes of Kolkata, late on Sunday.

Biplab Das has admitted to have killed Shibnath Das on December 24 and Sekhar Pal on December 19, police said. Both the victims were murdered at a ghat along the Hooghly in Sodepur in North 24 Parganas district.

While Biplab managed to bury Sekhar’s body, the first victim, he couldn’t do so with Shibnath’s, leading to its detection within hours of the murder, the police said.

“The accused seems to be a cool-headed criminal,” said an officer of Khardah police station. “He has not said very clearly the motive behind the murders. We will question him further.”

The police said Shibnath had left his house in Sodepur on Friday morning and did not return. The last time he spoke to one of his family members was around 10.30pm. The mobile phone was switched off thereafter.

Shibnath’s family members lodged a missing diary on Saturday and within the next few hours, the police discovered a body from Giribala Ghat in Sodepur.

“A fortnight back we had recovered another body from the spot,” said an officer.

After going through Shibnath’s mobile phone and gathering location information, investigators zeroed in on Biplab.

The police have learnt that Biplab was a resident of Narayanpur in Barasat and had been staying in Agarpara for the last few months.

It appears that he used to frequently share a drink or two with Shibnath and Sekhar. Shibnath often borrowed money from Biplab, the police said.
