On this day Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose assassination triggered World War I, was visiting the city. He was on a tour of India with his wife and kept a detailed journal.
The entry on this date shows that it was a busy day. In the morning the Archduke visited Kalighat temple, but was disappointed to not see any animal sacrifice. Then he visited the mint. In the afternoon he attended a military programme, where Lady Landsdowne distributed the prizes.
Then the party returned to Government House where a gala dinner and afterwards a soirée were awaiting them. Over 2,000 invitations had been sent out for the event and about 80 per cent of the invitees had come.
