Two school students injured in accidents

Five-year-old on James Long Sarani, was hit by app cab on Sarat Bose Road, other is 14-year-old student who was hit by motorcycle on MG Road

Two school students were injured inroad accidents in the city on Thursday.

One of them, a five-year-old student of a school on James Long Sarani, was hit by an app cab on Sarat Bose Road. The other is a 14-year-old student who was hit by a motorcycle on MG Road.

Police said Raidan Mondal, 5, a resident of Sister Nivedita Road in Behala, was walking along Sarat Bose Road with his mother and sibling around 12.15pm when an app cab coming out of a hospital compound hit the child from behind.

“The mother had two young children to manage and was also carrying bags. Raidan was walking ahead when a car coming out of a hospital compound hit him and he fell. He suffered an injury on one of his legs,” said an officer of Tollygunge police station. The child was treated at the same hospital.

Officers of Tollygunge police station impounded the vehicle and arrested the driver.

The other accident was reported around 10.25am on MG Road. A Class VIII student of a central Kolkata school was hit by a motorcycle.

Priti Roy, 14, a resident of Pulin Khatick Road, was treated at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.

The motorcyclist was taken to Burrabazar police station and later arrested for rash and negligent driving, the police said. The two-wheeler was seized.

An officer in the traffic department said in both cases, the children suffered relatively minor injuries and did not need hospitalisation.

“The accidents happened on crowded roads during peak traffic hours. It is important for all vehicles to maintain the speed limit to avert a collision with pedestrians or other vehicles, especially on crowded roads,” said the officer.

Biker hurt

A man riding a motorbike suffered injuries on the left leg after a private car hit the two-wheeler on Dufferin Road on Wednesday.

Mahmood Ahmed, 48, was wearing a helmet, police said. He is being treated at SSKM Hospital.

The driver of the car has been arrested.

Building fire

A fire broke out on the first floor of a residential building on Dhapa Road on Thursday evening.

One fire tender extinguished the fire. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, police said.
