The personal assistant of Trinamul Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was questioned at the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) office for more than nine hours till late on Monday.
Sumit Roy came out of the ED office at 9.45pm.
Roy, whose name had emerged during the ED investigation into alleged irregularities in the recruitment of teachers in government and government-sponsored schools in the state, had submitted a prayer before Calcutta High Court seeking a stay on the central agency’s summons that directed him to appear before the ED on Monday.
The prayer was submitted last week but as the matter did not come up for hearing
till Monday afternoon,Roy complied with the summons and appeared before ED officers at the agency’s office in the CGO complex in Salt Lake.
Later in the day, after the matter came up for hearing, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh
was informed that Roy had a few hours before complied with the summons issued by the central agency.
Justice Ghosh declined to issue any order at this stage as Roy had already complied with the summons.
The judge gave Roy the liberty to move the court if needed.
The bench fixed December 4 for the next hearing of the case.
An officer of the Enforcement Directorate said Roy was being questioned about the irregularities they had found during the probe.
Abhishek Banerjee, whose name, too, had cropped up during the probe into the alleged irregularities, had appealed against an order by Justice Amrita Sinha of the high court and got relief from a division bench that asked the ED to summon the leader only if it was dissatisfied with the documents submitted by him related to a company named Leaps and Bounds.
Banerjee is said to be the CEO of Leaps and Bounds.
Central investigating agencies suspect the company is linked to the alleged irregularities in recruitment of teachers in government and government-sponsored schools.
The court had also ordered that ED could summon Banerjee before October 19 or after
October 26, possibly keeping the Durga Puja dates in mind.
Roy, however, did not get any such relief from the court on Monday.
