A 22-year-old man who had arrived in the city for a doctor’s consultation fell while trying to jump off a moving bus and died after the bus ran over him on Saturday, police said.

The accident took place near the Benfish intersection in Sector V, opposite Nicco Park.

Mohammed Zeeshan Khan, from Gaya in Bihar, was headed to a private hospital to see a doctor, an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said.

Khan was taken to the Salt Lake Sub-divisional Hospital where he later died.

An officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said that Khan had landed in the city on Saturday.

“He was travelling alone and had jumped off the bus while it was still moving. As soon as he hit the ground, he lost his balance, slipped and fell,” a traffic police constable posted at the crossing said.

The rear wheels of the bus of the Dhulagarh-Karunamoyee route ran over his waist and legs, an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate’s traffic wing said.

Cops arrested the driver and seized the bus.

Across the city, private and government buses are often accused of reckless driving, picking up and dropping passengers in the middle of the road, jumping signals and trying to overtake other buses.

Senior police officers of the Bidhannagar commissionerate, however, pointed out the passenger was at fault in Saturday’s accident.

“Prosecuting bus drivers will not help if there is no awareness among passengers and pedestrians. There was possibly nothing that the driver or helper could have done if a passenger chose to jump out of the moving bus,” an officer said.

Traffic cops said buses with doors that shut could help check such accidents.
