Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked its councillors to conduct a survey and identify damaged stretches across its 41 wards and submit a report by the end of the month.

The survey is aimed to carry out ‘patchwork repairs on an urgent basis’ an official of the civic body said.

The decision was taken by mayor Krishna Chakraborty during a meeting earlier this week.

BMC has decided to allot Rs 10 lakh to each ward for the repairs, an official of the BMC’s road department said on Friday.

The Telegraph had reported on multiple occasions about the sorry state of roads in Salt Lake and it’s adjoining areas.

In Salt Lake, giant craters and potholes have formed on roads in all three sectors of the township.

The recent showers have made things worse. In several places the asphalt layer has disintegrated exposing the brickwork beneath. At several places sharp edges of the bricks are sticking out of the surface making it even more dangerous for motorists to drive through.

The situation is similar in places like Baguiati, Kestopur and Narayanpur.

“We have asked the councillors to conduct a survey. As soon as the reports are in the funds will be disbursed and the repairs will start,” mayor Krishna Chakraborty told The Telegraph on Friday.

A section of residents said that instead of relying on patchwork, the civic body should have carried out a thorough repair. “Patchwork repairs often create bumps and they wear off easily,” said Saheli Sinha, a techie who lives in Salt Lake and drives to her workplace in New Town.
