Attendance was thin in schools and many students reported late as it poured on Wednesday morning.

The overnight rain continued well into the morning when children set out for school.

Schools allowed children to walk in late for classes and did not turn them back like other days.

South City International School allowed children to write their examinations despite being late.

“Some of our students arrived late because of the weather. Question papers had been handed out to other students but we allowed the latecomers to start the examination after the scheduled time. They started late and finished late and we allowed them,” said Satabdi Bhattacharjee, principal, South City International.

The rain slowed down the morning traffic.

Around 8.30am, cars on Theatre Road had to switch their headlights on to navigate the traffic as it got unusually dark.

Getting down from vehicles took longer than usual with umbrellas and raincoats.

“Across classes we had poor attendance today. In one senior class, out of 45 students, 15 were absent,” said Joseph Chacko, senior school coordinator, St James’ School.

Attendance was also less than usual at Calcutta Girls High School, Delhi Public School New Town, Loreto Day School Elliot Road and Indus Valley World School.

“About 25 per cent of students across classes were absent on Wednesday,” said Amita Prasad, director, Indus Valley World School.

At Mahadevi Birla World Academy, the number of students in the lower kindergarten classes were so few that they clubbed the sections.

Many parents complained that their pool cars had not turned up.

Timely commute was not easy for teachers either.

“Some teachers could not come because of waterlogging in their areas,” Prasad said.

“We had about 20 per cent less attendance today,” said Jessica Gomes Surana, principal, Loreto Day School Elliot Road.
